On January 1, 1985, all animal species designated as "Rare" were reclassified as "Threatened". Animals that are candidates for state listing and animals proposed for federal listing are also included on this list.

Endangered and Threatened Animals of Utah
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources also maintains a list of protected wildlife species found in the state. As habitat or environmental conditions change so do animal populations.
Endangered Species
The Federal & State Endangered Species Acts (ESA) allow for the listing of animal and plant species that may become extinct if current trends and activities continue. The ESA mandates how to place a species on the threatened and endangered species list and how to take them off.
Endemic Plants & Animals
Although most of Death Valley's plant and animal species can be found growing in other places, there are a few that exist only in the Death Valley region and nowhere else in the world.
