E XECUTIVE S UMMARY Despite the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has successfully prevented 137 shortages since the beginning of 2010, drug shortages have been increasing in frequency and severity in recent years and adversely affecting patient care.
The study reports greater shortages of dentists and dental hygienists in rural areas compared to the general population with 57 percent of rural dentists indicating they planned to retire by 2013.
